Looking to the future and remembering the past!

Who would have thought that several years ago an Energy Conservation Director and a Managed Care Workers Compensation Director would be in the jewelry business? That is exactly what happened for Joe and Louise Hebert of Hebert Jewelers. It was time for a change and so Joe and Louise took the plunge, went back to school and bought Hebert Jewelers from Joe's brother. What Joe and Louise did not expect to happen was to fall in love with the downtown community. They have made so many friends and are actively involved in the growth and development of their downtown and the general business climate of Milford. Joe and Louise Hebert were awarded
the Milford Chamber of Commerce Business
Persons of the Year and Director of the Year
for their outstanding contributions and
leadership to the Milford Business Community!
And the rest is history!

Speaking of history....

Hebert Jewelers has been in downtown Milford
CT since 1953. John Hebert started the business on River Street where TJ's Package Store is now. Mr. Hebert turned 94 years young in January 2008! Joe and Louise recently acquired photographs depicting when the original site was under construction in the early 1950's. They also discovered that John Hebert's father, Felix, had a jewelry business named "Herbert Jewelers" that was located at 1 New Haven Avenue right next to the old Milford Pharmacy. Both Hebert and Herbert have been in downtown Milford since the 1940's.

So, what does the future hold....

Having a retail business has many challenges especially in today's economy. But Joe and Louise are committed to local, small businesses, which are the heart and soul of America. Places you can go where shop keepers know who you are, know your likes and dislikes and can give you the attention you deserve. One of the ways to stimulate growth is to look beyond the 4 walls of the brick and mortar and collaborate with local merchants, services, and restaurants to attract more people to downtown Milford. This is accomplished by working closely with local organizations such as the Milford Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Milford Business Association and regional tourist organizations.

Hebert's has come a long way from handwritten statements and a push button cash register to a fully integrated computer system, magazine advertisements, billboards, the Internet, ecommerce and ongoing advanced training. The one thing that has not changed is the integrity, honesty and commitment to their customers and local community that started way back in the 1940's!
